President's Comments:

July turned out to be not only a pleasant month weather wise, but also a busy month for the club. After almost burning up in June, July turned out to be a pleasant surprise with cooler temperatures and more rain. This probably had much to do with the good turn outs we had during our July events.

We started the month with the Vettes for Veterans’ at Talladega event on the 4th. This was a very enjoyable weekend, with 12 CCCC Vettes enjoying a scenic cruise through the Alabama hills, then doing “moderately” hot laps around the Talladega Superspeedway. Then on the 11th, we had the annual July Pool Party, and once again at our home in Enterprise. Hey, when you have a pool and a ½ acre grassy parking lot for club members, it's hard to not have the party. We had about 50 folks for the party, with delicious side dishes brought in by the club ladies. Then finally on the 25th, we accepted an invitation to join the Cruisin' Corvette club of Tallahassee to a Cruise to the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement in Blountstown. We suggested inviting the Emerald Coast club and then did so. So, this event turned out to be a ‘Southeast Corvette Club’ gathering. We had 18 cars, Tallahassee 10 and Panama City 6. After the Pioneer Settlement, we enjoyed lunch at Paramores restaurant.

Next month, we will start by supporting the Weevil City Cruiser Cruise-In in Enterprise on the 1st. The featured car for this event is the Corvette, so we should try to attend. Then on the 14-16th, the Emerald Coast club will be going to Helen GA for the weekend, and they have invited us to attend. Then on the 29th, our monthly Cruise will be to Seaby and Floy Bess’s place in Ashford for a Pool, Cook-out, Fishing party. This should be a blast so plan now to attend.

Tech Tips:

Tips for working with extreme Summertime Heat

Extreme temperatures are commonplace here in South Alabama. Here are a couple of good tips for keeping your car in good shape during the hot summers.

Check your Battery: Extreme temperatures are very hard on your battery. The heat will evaporate the battery fluid. Have your electrical system checked and ensure your charging system is working correctly. If you need to add water to your battery, use DISTILLED WATER. Your regular oil change is a perfect time to have this checked.

Check your cooling System: Have your cooling system checked. Change your coolant annually. With Corvettes especially, we do a lot of idling in the Summer heat. A few months of these temperatures has an affect on the coolant in your cooling system. A pressure test is also in order, along with a thermostat test and a cooling fan test.

Check your tires for wear: Check your tire pressure. Summer heat will cause the pressure within your tires to change dramatically throughout the Summer months. Have your tires rotated every 6,000 miles. (check your spare as well!)

With these few simple checks your car will last a long and healthy life.

Stay Cool!

Terry

14 - 16  The Emerald Coast Corvette club is cruises to Helen, GA a very picturesque town in the hills of north GA. They leave Friday morning and cruise through Dothan at 7:00 to meet with Jean and I at the Hardees on 231, across from Dobbs bar-b-que. We should arrive in Helen by mid-afternoon. Saturday we'll spend “playing” (tubing down the river, racing go-karts, driving the twisty roads in a spirited manner, and so forth), and we’ll return on Sunday. They have an itinerary and host hotel and all that. If you are interested email me ASAP, and I will send you all the information, as you need to act soon to get a motel reservation.

29  On the 29th, we will have our monthly cruise. This month we will cruise to Seaby and Floy Bess’s place in Ashford, for a pool, cook-out, fishing party!! Seaby has a nice big place with a pool , and a ½ acre pond that is full of nice size catfish. So, the fisherman in the club will get to try their luck and pulling in some catfish that we will clean and fry for the party. They will also be grilling burgers and dogs, and the ladies will be asked to bring a dish to share. More details at our August meeting.

July 11th Meeting and Pool Party at the Carters:  Thanks, Bruce and Jean

July 25th Cruise to Blountstown - In Bruce's words:

Hey, the cruise to Blountstown was a blast. We had 18 cars! The host club, Cruisin' Corvettes of Tallahassee had 10, and the Emerald Coast club of Panama City had 6.

The Pioneer village was very interesting, the catfish at Paramores was terrific, and the cruise there was very pleasant. The only ‘harrowing’ moment was when I discovered I had locked the keys in our Vette – oh boy am I having a bad “Corvette week” or what. With the aid of Gregg Prettyman who whittled a sharpened branch to hold the window slightly opened, and a coat hanger I got from a worker at the village, I managed to maneuver the straightened coat hanger downward, around the door handle, and tapped the ‘unlock’ button on the passenger door. Oh my gosh was I relieved when the horn started honking when I hit the button!!! Yes, I saved the hanger!! See the photos below from Andrew.

Car of the Month:

My fascination with the Corvette began in 1965, when a flight school classmate showed up with a 1962 Red Convertible. After just a few rides in it, I had made up my mind that I too was going to have a Vette. As luck would have it, there just happened to be a new “65” convertible sitting on the showroom floor of then “Dick Flick Chevrolet” in downtown Enterprise. Armed with a new “65” Impala SS for trade-in and enough income to make payments for three years, I bought it. Thus the saga began. For the next 40+ years I've managed to buy eleven Vettes of various models and colors and hope to continue doing so for years to come. The only change I see in the foreseeable future will be more emphasis on “Show” and less on “Go”, having seen 165 mph in my younger years ...
